Austin Formula 1 Race Date Moved to November

While the U.S. Grand Prix was originally set to take place in Austin, Texas in June of next year, Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has made the decision to move the event to November 18, 2012. While the decision has faced some criticism, organizers of the event have reportedly responded positively to the change. In fact, Tavo Hellmund, who is the chairman of the U.S. Grand Prix, the decision to push back the date is a “positive sign” that Formula One officials want the event to be an “over-the-top success.”

Austin to Move to Stage 2 Water Restrictions Starting September 6

Due to triple digit heat coupled with lack of rain, the city of Austin plans to move to Stage 2 water restrictions starting September 6. These new guidelines will make it even more difficult for residents who are trying to keep their lawns and other plant life alive.

Under the new guidelines, residents will only be able to water their lawns once per week and on designated days. While hand-watering will be allowed at any time, the use of sprinkler systems will only be allowed before 10:00 a.m. and after 7:00 p.m. Other restrictions included in State 2 are:

Plans for F1 Facilities Finalized in Austin

After years of hard work to bring Formula One to Austin and months spent developing the plan for the track and its facilities, the project received final approval in January. As expected, the final plan will involve far more than just a 3.4 mile track. In addition to the numerous attractions that will be included within the $250 million facility, project developers will also be building a private substation for Austin Energy as part of the plan.

Austin-Bergstrom Airport Announces New Nonstop Flights to Cancun

For Austinites who love to travel, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has made an exciting announcement: as of June 2, the airport will be offering a nonstop flight from Austin to Cancun, Mexico.

The new addition to the flight schedule will provide Austin residents with a couple different options to select from, with flights leaving on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1:50 p.m. and arriving at 4:10 p.m. Return flights, on the other hand, will leave at 10:30 from Cancun and will arrive back in Austin at 12:50 p.m.

New Property Appraisal Laws in Effect in Texas

Several new laws affecting homeowners went into effect on January 1 of this year. It certainly isn't uncommon to hear Austinites complain about the traffic they experience while traversing the city. But, according to a report recently released by the Texas Department of Transportation, Austin does not rank at the top of the list of congested traffic areas throughout the state. In fact, within its list of the top 100 most congested roadways in the State, downtown's Austin’s I-35 was ranked at number 26. Highways and interstates running through Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, on the other hand, were listed far ahead of Austin's I-35.
