Lake Austin is also a reservoir, and one of the seven Highland Lakes created by the Lower Colorado River Authority in the early 1940s. The lake's narrowness and steep cliffs have made it a perfect flood control basin, although it is primarily known for its recreation and residential uses. Homeowners here enjoy swimming and boating in Lake Austin's clean waters, as well as fishing - the lake is stocked regularly with largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish. Highway 360 crosses Lake Austin at Pennybacker Bridge, and makes a perfect spot for boat launching. Lake Austin stretches 22 miles between Mansfield Dam and Tom Miller Dam.
