Enjoying Family Time in Austin

If you have children, whether they are young or teens, you will find that there is plenty to see and to do as a family in the Austin area.  Here is a look at just a few of the great attractions that Austin has to offer to families.

  • Explore dozens of interactive exhibits at the Austin Children’s Museum
  • Visit the Austin Nature and Science Center and take a walk down the Eco-Detective Trail, where you will encounter hands-on activities as well as close encounters with mammals, birds, and reptiles
  • Take a swim or play in the pool fed by a spring at Deep Eddy
  • Take a ride on the glass bottom boats at the Aquarena Center in San Marcos and look at exhibits of endangered species of animals
  • Tike a ride on the miniature train, take a swim in Barton Creek, or play in the playscape located at Zilker Park
  • Enjoy a picnic or go camping at one of the many Lower Colorado River Authority Parks
  • Listen to ghost stories and stories of family history at the Niel-Cochran House, which is a Greek Revival Limestone museum
  • Take a step back to pioneer times at the Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farm, which is a living history farm that depicts how life was in Texas for the pioneers
  • Visit the 600 year old Treaty Oak, which actually received get well cards and cans of soup when it was poisoned back in 1989
  • Enjoy live music along 6th Street every night
  • Get a look at Native American artifacts, fossils, and rare Texas gems at the Texas Memorial Museum
  • Get up close and personal to tanks, airplanes, helicopters, and cannons at Camp Mabry, which is a Military Forces Museum
  • Take a walk through prehistoric times at Zilker Park as you follow the Dinosaur Tracks
  • Visit the Frank Erwin Center and enjoy a sporting event, a concert, or other cultural event
  • Take a ride through the city at night in a horse-drawn carriage
  • Go shopping at one of the many malls and specialty stores located throughout the city
  • Enjoy a great meal at one of the many restaurants in the city and along Town Lake
  • Get a taste of something sweet at the Old Bakery and Emporium, which is where the senior citizens of Austin sell their home-baked goodies
  • Enjoy Latin-American music at one of the tropical, Tejano, or conjunto band venues
  • Enjoy down-home Southern cooking and listen to the fiddles play every Wednesday at Threadgill’s
